The Institute of the Americas (IOA), a non-partisan, independent institution founded almost 45 years ago to promote economic development and regional integration, along with the objective of improving the economic and social well-being of all citizens of the Americas, opposes unilateral tariffs on USMCA trade partners and other actions that threaten allied nations’ sovereignty in the Western Hemisphere. These measures undermine United States’ foreign policy interests and hinder economic development in the hemisphere; they also erode trust and collaboration.
We are at a crucial juncture and the United States has an important opportunity to strengthen its influence in the Americas by addressing regional needs while offering a compelling alternative and countering China’s growing presence through expanded trade, investment, and resilient supply chains based on democratic principles.
Therefore, IOA advocates for enhanced cooperation with Mexico and Canada to address issues such as fentanyl trafficking and migration, rather than imposing tariffs that harm North American economies. Strengthening regional ties can bolster United States security and foster long-term stability, reducing migration pressures, while economic uncertainty and chaos bring the opposite result.
By building bridges, fostering dialogue and maintaining our hard-earned trust, an opportunity exists for the United States to leave a lasting legacy across the Western Hemisphere that will not only make America more secure but also build a brighter future for people across the Americas.
